The Jorvik Viking Centre
Travel aboard a timecar back to the 1000 year old Viking City of
Yorvik, through the bustling market, dark smoky houses and busy
wharfside. Experience a moment of York's history recreated using
archaeological evidence and displayed on it's original site,
complete with the sounds and smells of the Viking age.
The Jorvik Viking Centre was built following the success of a five
year excavation project which took place on the world famous
Coppergate site. The settlement which was excavated was remarkably
well preserved by the surrounding water-logged soil and provided
valuable information on the Viking city of Jorvik. Hundreds of
artefacts discovered during the dig can now be viewed in the Skipper
Gallery within the centre.
The centre has enjoyed over 10 million visitors in it's 12 years
since construction, and is the most popular visitor attraction of
its kind outside London.
Artefacts and finds in the gallery are being constantly updated as
technology moves forward. The latest figures are created using real
Viking skulls laser scanned then sculpted to produce a real `face
from the past`. Authentic Viking costumed characters can also be
found as you journey through the centre in your timecar.
